BHP Billiton, a leading global natural resources company, was struggling to receive recognition for its community contributions and accomplishments. Media was reactive, press coverage unbalanced and there existed an intense lack of public awareness in the communities in which it operated. Agenda created an integrated community and media relations strategy, positioning BHP as a transparent and environmentally responsible corporate citizen and provided crisis management. The strategy worked. BHP gained significant recognition for its community giving, which led to strong support during permit renewal public hearings, benefitting from a greatly enhanced public perception of the mining industry (specifically coal mining).
