Northwest New Mexico has a long history of energy production, including coal and natural gas. But up until recently, one of the key populations there, the Navajo Nation, had no ownership stake in the generation of power.
Erny Zah, director of communications and media affairs for the Navajo Transitional Energy Co., says the company has moved quickly since forming in 2013. NTEC employs around 800, a majority at the mine located west of Farmington.
The company also announced in April that it returned $35 million in royalties to the Navajo Nation.
